ALTCS: Arizona Long Term Care System
Arizona's Medicaid long-term care program — medical and financial eligibility, the application process, and how to avoid the delays that cost families months.
Professional Introduction
Understanding ALTCS
ALTCS is Arizona's Medicaid program for people who require a nursing-facility level of care. For many families it is the difference between sustainable care and a savings account that disappears in eighteen months.
Eligibility has two independent gates. The medical gate is a functional and cognitive assessment. The financial gate reviews income and countable resources, with rules for married couples, trusts, and prior transfers that are frequently misunderstood.
Most delays are avoidable and documentary. This category explains eligibility in plain language, the paperwork that stalls applications, and how ALTCS interacts with assisted living, memory care, and residential care homes across Arizona.

Family Questions
ALTCS: common questions
Does ALTCS pay for assisted living in Arizona?
Yes, for members who meet both eligibility gates and choose a contracted setting. Members typically remain responsible for a share of room and board, and not every community participates.
How long does ALTCS approval take?
Timelines vary and are driven largely by documentation completeness. Applications submitted with full financial records move substantially faster than those requiring repeated requests.
